In the long months leading up to the trial, Bobby Lee Cookâs impending visit to Alabama and his role in the case continued to be big news in that state, but the Alabama twins case earned barely a mention in Cookâs home state of Georgia. There, people were more interested in the bigger cases keeping Cook busy that year.
There was an enormous flurry for a while when it looked as if he might win a new trial for Wayne Williams, convicted in 1982 of the Atlanta child murders. Before anyone had time to notice that he hadnât succeeded in that endeavor, Bobby Lee Cook was back in the headlines with an even bigger caseâthe âIraqgateâ arms-trading case. Coming into the case three weeks before his client, a former Atlanta banker, was to be sentenced, Cook dumped over the entire apple cart, moving to withdraw his clientâs earlier guilty plea.
He accused the federal government and the Bush administration of the âmother of all cover-ups.â He told the judge that federal prosecutors were deliberately not calling key witnesses, and the judge was so impressed by Cookâs argument that he threatened to call some of the witnesses on his own authority.
Cook was literally a lone knight, doing battle with powerful international banking and armaments interests, the White House, national Republican power wielders, and the media, not to mention the CIA. After a long struggle, he cut the governmentâs case off at the knees, persuading the court to throw out the guilty plea and grant his client a full trial on the charges.
In Bettyâs mind, the fee of more than $100,000 that she was paying Cook for his role, and the enormous publicity the case was earning in Alabama, made the case a major event. In fact, the Betty Wilson case was a bit of business that Cook needed to fit in among other pressing matters.
One of the efficiencies Bobby Lee Cook employed, in order to maintain control over a wide-ranging practice, was the use of state-of-the-art computer-driven communications. Sandlin and Hooper spent a good deal of time cranking huge volumes of information into computers so that the information could be faxed or direct-transferred to Cookâs offices in Summerville.
Itâs a system all successful lawyers and most successful business and professional people use today. Why spend days and a lot of money traveling, when the computer can spit out everything you need to know? Why not peruse the information on your laptop computer, sitting in your favorite wicker chair at the house on Sea Island?
The downside of doing business this way, of course, is that people donât spend much time getting to know each other in the old-fashioned eyeball-to-eyeball way that business used to be conducted. But Bobby Lee Cook was an extremely able and experienced litigator and a quick study, and this was how he could afford to take the case. Under the circumstances, there was no other way to get him.
The defense team was nervous about some of what they had seen of
